The Top Ten Myths About Black America

The next time someone passes around one of these tired myths, if you can resist smacking them in the mouth, pass on some real data to them, or at least encourage them to do some research themselves before passing lies as truth.

1 There are more Black men in prison than in college.

  • As late as 2004, the US Census reported that there were 864,000 Black men in college.
  • Out of the 40 million-plus African Americans that the 2008 Census found, less than one million are in jail or prison.
jail or college

2 Black people, particularly Black men, are lazy.

  • According to the US Census Bureau, 68.1% of all Black men and 62.3% of Black women over the age of 16 are in the civilian labor force.
  • Of the 40 million-plus Blacks in this nation, only 8.1 million have incomes below the poverty line.

3  Black people abuse the Welfare system and are swelling it beyond capacity.

  • The actual number of Black families on Welfare has been decreasing since the early 1970’s.
  • Benefit programs for predominantly White farmers and big businesses far outweigh the Welfare program. Who is abusing welfare?

4. Most Black men are married to White women.

  • According to the most recent Census statistics, more than 90% of all Black men who are married are married to Black women.

5. Affirmative Action unfairly provides opportunities for Black America.

  • Affirmative Action is inappropriately used to define Black preferential treatment and “quotas” but it was actually designed to benefit a number of groups who have been discriminated against, creating parity in the workplace.
  • Since the 1970’s, Affirmative Action has benefited White women more than any other group.

6. Poor Blacks would be better off if they stopped using drugs and took better care of their communities.  And, Blacks need to stop pushing drugs to their own people.

  • According to a study by the Sentencing Project, the number of Blacks in prison for drug-related crimes fell by 21.6 % from 1999 to 2005, while the number of Whites in prison for drug-related crimes increased by 42 % during the same time period.

7 Blacks suffer from Black on Black crime.

  • Many crimes, including murder, rape and robbery, are crimes of location, not color. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, 85% of African Americans report another Black person as the perpetrator of the crime and 80% of White murders were committed by other Whites.
  • However, when race does play a role in crime, the victims of violent crimes are more likely to be Black, while the perpetrators, are more likely to be White.

Blacks commit more crimes than Whites.

  • According to “The Real War on Crime,” a report by the National Criminal Justice Commission, African-American arrest rates for drugs during the height of the ‘drug war’ in 1989 were five times higher than arrest rates for Whites even though Whites and African-Americans were using drugs at the same rate.
  • According to the Federal Judicial Center, the average sentences for African Americans for weapons and drug charges have been 49% longer than for Whites who had been convicted of the same crimes.

9 Women outnumbering men in college is a Black phenomenon.

  • According to the US Department of Education, male undergraduates account for 44 percent of student population, while female undergraduates account for 56 percent.  This is not race specific.

10 Integration and Assimilation were positive developments for African-Americans.

  • False. Black America had great success before integration. In fact, by 1900, the number of African-American businesses nationally, totaled 40,000, including the Greenfield Bus Body Company, which manufactured automobiles, and a hotel in New York City valued at $75,000. By 1908, we had 55 privately owned banks. By 1912, there were two millionaires, Madam C.J. Walker (hair care) and R. R. Church (real estate).
  • By 1923, Tulsa, Oklahoma was home to The Black Wall Street, an African American community of 11,000.  Which featured nine hotels, nineteen restaurants and thirty-one grocery stores and meat markets, ten medical doctors, six lawyers, and five real estate and loan insurance agencies, complete with five private planes.

  1. ” There are more Black men in prison than in college.

As late as 2004, the US Census reported that there were 864,000 Black men in college.
Out of the 40 million-plus African Americans that the 2008 Census found, less than one million are in jail or prison.

There is nothing here to show that the claim is a myth. Last time I checked, 1M > 864,000 so based on the information presented there could well be more in prison than in college.

      • Hi there, you’ve got a typo in your first point. As written, it actually looks like there are more black men in prison than college, which does not match the data in the study you reference.

        As written:
As late as 2004, the US Census reported that there were 864,000 Black men in college.

        Should be:
As late as 2004, the US Census reported that there were 1,444,797 Black men in college.

      • Since we’re looking at these numbers here’s some for you:

In 2009, 905,800 prison/jail in mates were black, blacks being 13% of the population on the 2010 census. 785,900 inmates were non-Hispanic white, Non-Hispanic whites making up about 72% of the population on the 2010 census.

The conclusion: While it does appear that more black men are in college than in prison or jail, blacks as usual are vastly over represented in the prison population. This, not surprisingly, is because they are vastly over represented among criminal perpetrators. When you are committing 49% of the murders and 55% of the robberies you are going to be a large portion of the prison population. The simple fact is you are never going to refute the fact that blacks commit crime at vastly higher per capita rates than whites with any reliable statistic because you can’t refute the truth.

  2. “8 Blacks commit more crimes than Whites.

According to “The Real War on Crime,” a report by the National Criminal Justice Commission, African-American arrest rates for drugs during the height of the ‘drug war’ in 1989 were five times higher than arrest rates for Whites even though Whites and African-Americans were using drugs at the same rate.
According to the Federal Judicial Center, the average sentences for African Americans for weapons and drug charges have been 49% longer than for Whites who had been convicted of the same crimes.

This doesn’t disprove the “myth”. The fact is blacks are vastly over represented in all violent offender categories. In 2012 according to the FBI Uniform Crime Reports blacks who are 13% of the population were 49% of homicide offenders and were 55% of robbery offenders. They were also over represented compared to their percentage of the population in all violent offender categories, usually vastly over represented.

The truth hurts. Deal with it.

    • The truth is that Blacks are over-represented in surveillance targets, arrests and convictions. They are UNDER-represented in the crimes that do the most damage to society, like fraud, internet crime, drug smuggling, and bribery. And- whaddo you know!- those same crimes are looked over, under-reported, and you will never see a discussion in mainstream media about the ethnicity and race of the perpetrators… …because they’re Khazar (Jewish) and ‘White’!

The truth don’t hurt me. How does it feel to you?

      • Just curious, why do you call the Jews the Khazars? Khazars were Turkic people whose ELITE accepted Judaism, but most of them after the fall of the Khazar Khanate went back east to the steppes and formed numerous other tribes which then became parts of modern Turkic nations.

      • Oh yeah, fraud and internet crime (which is almost always a type of fraud and therefore would be in the same category) are more damaging than murder. Sure. Blacks are overrepresented in arrests and convictions, because, and no surprise here, THEY COMMIT VASTLY MORE CRIME per capita and hence are convicted of and arrested for more crimes per capita. I guess blacks are 55% of robbery perps in 2012 because robbery victims were just so racist against the black man they lied about the race of the perp rather than give information that would actually result in the arrest and conviction of the person who robbed them? Rape victims too huh? Just so out to get the black man that they lie about the race of their attackers to stick it to the black man? Yeah, sure. Jess Jackson nailed it when he said: “There is nothing more painful to me at this stage of my life than to walk down the street and hear footsteps and start thinking about robbery, then look around and see somebody white and feel relieved.” Even Jesse doesn’t buy your excuses and knows full well that blacks commit violent crime FAR OUR OF PROPORTION to their percentage of the population. Also, not surprisingly, a look at the 2012 FBI UCR confirms that you have no idea what you are talking about anyway. Contrary to what you claim, blacks, at 13% of the population were 31% of fraud perpetrators making them over represented by a factor of more than two. Embezzlement? Nope, you’re still wrong. 33% of perpetrators in that category were black. How about forgery and counterfeiting? Nope. Blacks were 32% in that category. In fact, again, not surprisingly, blacks are over represented in EVERY SINGLE OFFENDER CATEGORY in the FBI UCR other than driving under the influence and they are usually vastly over represented. Sorry, you have a right to your own opinions but not to your own facts.

      • BTW if you want to blame racism for black’s epidemic crime rates in the US lets compare US crime rates to those of black African countries. You aren’t going to like the numbers at all. Yeah, I know, black African law enforcement is racist against the black man too……everybody is racist against the poor black man even black law enforcement in black majority countries.

Here are some international homicide numbers including those from Africa. Read ’em and weep.

      • ” And- whaddo you know!- those same crimes are looked over, under-reported, and you will never see a discussion in mainstream media about the ethnicity and race of the perpetrators… …because they’re Khazar (Jewish) and ‘White’!”

I guess the OBAMA DOJ, headed by BLACK MAN Eric Holder is a “Khazer (Jewish) and White” organization too eh since that’s where my stats are from. Stats that prove your claims regarding blacks being under represented WRONG and show that blacks are over estimated as perpetrators in every offender category other than driving under the influence. The Obama DOJ and black man Eric holder beez rasissss gainst da black man to eh? That damn racist Obama. LMAO

      • Well, it’s interesting that in your view, crimes such as murder, aggravated assault, rape, kidnapping, burglary and armed robbery cause less human and social damage than internet fraud. I guess that all the points of view do indeed exist in this world. As for blacks being more policed, trust me, I would prefer the police to stay in my peaceful white neighborhood to look over my house rather than be sucked in in violent black neighor because of the i sane amount of crimes committed there. I tell you, if the police started to poli e my neighborhood further, they would not suddenly start to fnd murderers and armed robbers because first, the crimes were. Kt committed in the first place.
