Girls Really Do Mature Quicker than Boys, Scientists Find

Girls’ brains can begin maturing from the age of 10 while some men have to wait until 20 before the same organisational structures take place, Newcastle University scientists have found.

They discovered that as the brain matures it begins to ‘prune’ information that is stored and focus on what is important.  For girls this can happen as early as 10 years old, but for boys it can take until between 15 and 20 for the same.

One African Tribe Populated Rest of the World

The entire human race outside Africa owes its existence to the survival of a single tribe of around 200 people who crossed the Red Sea 70,000 years ago, scientists have discovered. While there are 14 ancestral populations in Africa itself, just one seems to have survived outside of the continent.

The earliest human remains found outside of Africa were discovered in Palestine and are thought to be around 100,000 years old. They are remains of a group that left Africa through what is now the Sahara desert during a brief period when the climate grew wetter, turning the desert green with vegetation. This excursion, however, failed and the population died out when the climate started to dry out again.

Despite their similarly light skin color, East Asians have melanoma incidences similar to Africans.

Japan’s Newest Island Triples in Size

Niijima was first noticed on November 20. On the next day, the Japanese coast guard released video of the island forming, showing billowing smoke, steam, ash, and rocks exploding from a crater that had erupted from the sea.

At the time, Japanese scientists were unsure how long the island would last, as the ocean often reclaims such volcanic islets within a short time.

Since then, however, the island has grown significantly, thanks to ongoing eruptions of the underlying volcano.
